Impressions of The Mortal Instruments - City of Bones

Hi guys!

Yesterday I went to watch one of my most anticipated movie of the year: The Mortal Instruments with Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kevin Zegers, Robert Sheehan, Godfrey Gao and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, directed by Harald Zwart. The film is based of the book series by Cassandra Clare, which I read six months earlier. What I love about good fantasy books is the the way it transports you into that world for a few hours. You're not the reader anymore, but you're in that certain moment with them. Cassandra Clare definitely did that with the books, but did the movie do it justice?

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

Luckily, I didn't remember the exact order of the plot or small details, so I couldn't compare the movie on that aspect. Obviously, movies can NEVER be the same as books. They are limited to 90-180 minutes, so everything has to be compact, yet the whole atmosphere and important parts of the plot have to be portrayed. Movies also reach out to people who haven't read the books, so it still has to be exciting for them.

One word, that has to be used to describe the movie is the realness of it. The animations of the demons were so real and lively! I was disgusted and mesmerized at the same time. The first demon is dog, whose head splits and its brain becomes the demons body. It looked horrific, because it was revolting. Another thing that added to the realness of the movie is how the reactions of the characters were acted out. Clary (Lily Collins) sees the friend of her mum, turning out to be a werewolf, so yes, she screams her lungs out. She's horrified, scared and not turned on *cough* Bella *cough*. After being attacked by the dog-brain-demon she has a mental breakdown! That's how I would react. Lilly Collins is a perfect match for Clary. Jamie C. Bower is so-so, perfect happy, sarcastic Jace, not so good sad and hurt Jace.
Anyway, another push to the realness factor is the awesome chemistry between the cast. It's obvious in the movie and definitely helpes out with the emotional scenes. Especially the kiss between the protagonists is so passionate and even makes your own heart beat faster, but when the sprinkler comes on and lookes like rain - overrkill! The scene becomes cheesy :(.

A hidden gem of the film is Godfrey Gao. He is yummy and makes Magnus Bane even more yummy. First time in my life I found bueish glitter guyliner hot! And he rocks those shorts even though I have to admit I found them a bit disturbing at first.

All in all, sadly the movie doesn't have enough time to convey the whole atmosphere of the books, but is definitely worth checking out, especially if you haven't read the books.
So what did you think about the movie or the books? Tell us in the comments.

Take care until next time,
xoxo Lily
